Elder Futhark Collection – SigRun Design

Elder Futhark Collection

The Elder Futhark is the oldest form of the runic alphabets in the North. Generally used by Germanic people from the 2nd to the 8th century, the elder futhark pre-dates the younger futhark which was commonly used by Scandinavia and Iceland during the Viking age. The elder Futhark is the alphabet of the ancestors of the Vikings.

Runic inscriptions are found on artefacts, including jewellery, amulets, weapons, and runestones. This design looks upon runestones from the same period and uses the same common method of writing vertically rather than horizontally which came later.

The runes on this design show the 24 characters of the Elder Futhark.
